The Codex plugin is the recommended way to use MCP for Blender in Codex. It runs the same server as a plain MCP setup and adds:
- Live viewport in the chat. The latest viewport screenshot appears inline whenever the AI takes one, and can be expanded to fullscreen or opened as a tab beside the thread. It refreshes after the AI changes the scene. Click an object in it to attach that object to your next message.
- Thumbnail asset pickers. Poly Haven, Sketchfab, and Poly Pizza searches show results as a grid of thumbnails, so you choose what gets imported.
- @-mentions. Type
@in the composer to reference scene objects, materials, and collections. - A longer tool timeout (10 minutes), so AI model generation doesn't time out.
You still need the Blender addon installed and Blender open. The one-command installer sets up the addon.
Install
The plugin isn't in the Codex plugin directory yet, so add it from the GitHub repository:
Add the marketplace
git clone https://github.com/ahujasid/mcp-for-blender.git codex plugin marketplace add ./mcp-for-blender/integrations/codexInstall the plugin
Restart Codex, open the plugins directory, and install MCP for Blender.
Try it
Open Blender, then ask Codex to use MCP for Blender, for example "Open the Blender viewport" or "Add a wooden chair from Poly Pizza".
If you haven't installed MCP for Blender yet, go to the Quickstart first.
Without the plugin
A plain MCP server works in Codex too; see MCP Clients. The installer's Codex entry turns on the viewport and asset pickers with BLENDER_MCP_APPS=1 and BLENDER_MCP_OPENAI_FORMS=1 (see Configuration). AI model generation can outlast Codex's default 60-second tool timeout; to raise it, add tool_timeout_sec = 600 under [mcp_servers.blender] in ~/.codex/config.toml.
